Macadamia nuts
Macadamia trees are predominantly grown in the central and eastern regions of Kenya, particularly in the counties of Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Embu, and Meru. These areas have the ideal conditions for macadamia cultivation, including fertile soil, adequate rainfall, and a favorable temperature range of 15°C to 32°C.
Macadamia trees require well-drained soils with a pH range of 5.0 to 6.5. Farmers usually plant macadamia seeds in nurseries before transplanting them to the field after six months. The trees need sufficient water, and it is crucial to ensure proper irrigation during the dry seasons.
Farmers also need to prune the macadamia trees to maintain the ideal height and shape for easy harvesting. Pests and diseases, such as macadamia nut borer and root rot, can significantly impact yields, so regular pest control measures and proper management practices are critical.
